Reducing Unwanted Noise through Landscaping

How can you block unwanted noise from raucous neighbors or a loud street? Landscaping can help block, filter and mask those annoying noises.  To help better understand how this process works, we chatted with Jeff Ferrasci, owner of Custom Landscape.

Here are some of his tips:

Barrier Fences - A barrier fence can be an effective way to reduce noise, but only if the structure is solid and thick enough to block out the sound waves. Masonry walls made from stone, brick, or stucco-covered concrete work best.

Water Fountains – A fountain or water feature can replace undesired noises with the calming, serene sound of water. Gurgling water creates a continuous sound in the same frequency range as less desirable sounds such as lawn mowers, people talking, or air conditioners, but since the fountain is close by, its sound will dominate. A water feature with a valve can be adjusted to provide a tranquil trickle of water or rushing water to drown out noise when necessary.

Shrubbery – Because sound perception is highly subjective, out of sight can mean out of mind. Trees and shrubs that block the street can trick your brain and help create a peaceful sanctuary. Of course, rustling leaves can be a source of ‘white noise’ and help mask those unwanted sounds.
